Go Local, Go Pink!

J. Kings is a Long Island company supporting their community by servicing local chefs, cooks and caterers and doing over $41,000,000 in annual sales with local farms, bakers, meat companies and other vendors.  For the entire month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, J. Kings is proud to work with the Maurer Foundation to help raise money and build awareness of this devastating disease by asking its customers to participate in their Great Meals Great Cause Great Neighbors campaign.

There are a number of ways you can participate in the campaign: by purchasing elegant breast cancer pins, buying bakery fresh pink ribbon cookies or through any other method you know will raise money for the cause. For contributing to the Maurer Foundation through the Great Meals Great Cause Great Neighbors Campaign, your generosity will be recognized with a full page announcement in Newsday to thank all who participated in the program and a beautiful wall plaque acknowledging your support.

Breast Cancer treatment without surgery

Recently I heard about a new phase ll clinical trial on a new Breast Cancer Treatment. It’s called cryoablation — a process where the tumor is frozen to kill the abnormal cells. This may be an effective treatment for patients with invasive ductal breast cancer

Here at the Maurer Foundation our  message has always been that breast cancer happens 365 days a year not just during the month of October. As we enter into breast cancer awareness month, you will be hearing a lot of new information. Always remember to take the time to do your research and contact us if you have any questions.

Education Saves Lives!

As I mentioned earlier, The Maurer Foundation is unique in where we are solely dedicated to educating people of all ages about breast health. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to train a new set of Peer Educators this week at Syosset High School through Maurer’s BBS (Being Breast Smart) program that trains High School juniors and seniors how to present a breast health program while helping them develop leadership skills so that they can share the information to their fellow classmates. Speaking to teens about being proactive with their health and taking preventative action in regards to breast health is something that has at times been an overwhelming wonderful feeling.

As an educator, I also have had lots of powerful moments with breast cancer survivors who have thanked me for being an advocate for early detection. Last night I was representing TMF at the 21st Annual Kickoff Gala for the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I met so many great and influential people who asked me various questions about who we are and what we do. As much as I love teaching younger people I know that the impact of breast cancer and the affect it has on lives is something that takes on a whole new meaning for those who have been diagnosed. While discussing what I do to another member of the Chamber I recalled the story of an email I received from a woman who decided to do her Breast Self Examination after watching one of our programs. She felt a lump which she later found out was Stage 1 breast cancer. Stage 1 can have anywhere from a 95%-98% survival rate! Her doctors stressed to her how great it was that it was caught so early and her treatment was successful.

Education can save lives and that’s what we do but we need support with donations and opportunities to present our program to as many venues as possible. Be proactive about your breast health: contact The Maurer Foundation today!

Nutrition Reduces Your Risk Of Breast Cancer?

Nutrition plays a large role in our lives, or at least it should; and surprisingly, can help lower your risk of breast cancer as well. On Tuesday I had the opportunity to represent the Maurer Foundation at the United Way CFC Agency Fair and I found that most of the women who attended were shocked to learn that good nutrition can lower your risk of breast cancer.

Now you may ask: How does nutrition reduce your risk for breast cancer?

Most types of breast cancer are estrogen related. Fat cells in the body store high levels of estrogen, which increase the threat of breast cancer. Maintaining a normal body weight is crucial component in decreasing your risk. You should aim to keep your saturated fat intake to 20 grams or less per day and avoid trans-fat completely.

Even if you’re not a nutrition expert there are many services that can help. The Nutrition Switch List on the Maurer Foundation website helps people make smarter decisions about the food they choose to eat and provides them with healthy alternatives. One of my personal favorites is the Weight Watchers program which helps manage portion control and still allows you to eat some of your favorite foods. Another helpful guide is the book, “Eat This Not That”, published by Rodale Publications, the same publishers who bring you “Women’s (and Men’s) Health Magazine”. The book is loaded with calorie, fat, sugar, carbohydrate, and sodium counts designed to help you make smarter food choices.

Start practicing good nutrition today; you won’t believe how much better you will look and feel, while reducing your risk of breast cancer!

Philanthropy Makes Our Whole Community Stronger

At The Maurer Foundation, we are blessed to be part of a community of supporters and friends who are connected to many other wonderful organizations who enrich our lives and make Long Island a wonderful place to live.

This week a number of my board members and I were fortunate to attend a dinner for the Huntington YMCA where Chris Mitchell of Mitchells|Marshs was honored.  In addition to being a wonderful friend to The Maurer Foundation, Chris and his entire family are multi-generational supporters of the Y program.  What a fantastic evening and a great event!

Here in Nassau County, Senator Craig Johnson, another wonderful friend of our organization has been gathering much needed school supplies all month to support less fortunate students and classroom teachers.  It was an honor for our staff at the Foundation to join the Senator in helping out with this project. Way to go Senator Johnson and thanks for doing something cool like this!!

One of the most important things we know here at The Maurer Foundation– philanthropy makes our entire community stronger.  And when we celebrate and support each others organization, philanthropy is reinforced as the wonderful action that it is.

Hi Everyone!

September is turning out to be very busy in the program department, and we’re very excited about that!  One of my favorite things about working at the Maurer Foundation is going out to educate people about early detection of breast cancer.  I’ll be on Long Island at Jericho High School, Walt Whitman High School and the Nassau County Department of health this week.  I really enjoyed meeting new students last week, in the first of ten classes I’ll be teaching for Murrow High School’s “Being Breast Smart Peer Education Program”, in Brooklyn, NY!  The women at the YWCA of NYC were a pleasure to speak to, as were the students at Brentwood High School on Friday.  I reached 250 people last week, and will reach about 450 this week.  It’s great that so many people of all ages benefit from our programs!

Creative Ways To Fundraise For Awareness!

As the month of October approaches, people are beginning to think of creative ways to raise money and awareness for The Maurer Foundation.  Some clever events we’re proud to mention — Keeping Breast Cancer “Reel” with a movie night, selling magic stretch gloves in the high schools reminding students “Use Your Hand and Do Your Monthly Breast Exam” and we can’t forget tempting the sweet tooth with “Cookies that Care.” On a larger scale, we are pleased to be a recipient of proceeds from the sales of Fat bastard wine during the months of September and October.

Whatever your creative idea, do it!  Whatever your cause, support it!

Together, our mission will be heard…..Kathy (Director of Development)

LI Ducks Breast Cancer Awareness Night!

Maurer Foundation and volunteers working at LI Ducks game
Maurer Foundation and volunteers working at LI Ducks game

The staff at The Maurer Foundation had a fun night last Tuesday evening at the Long Island Ducks 4th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

We would like to thank the LI Ducks and all of the folks that stopped by our table to say hello. Many of the fans commented on our Pink Bus that was parked outside of the stadium. The Pink Bus travels throughout the tri-state reinforcing the message that early detection equals survival. In an effort to build continuous awareness, The Pink Bus will travel through many northeast communities with influential quarterly ads promoting the importance of early detection.

One of the highlights of the night is when one of the fans won our raffle prize which was a candy cake donated by Kathy and Patrick Lough.
