The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

It was March of 1995 when breast surgeon Virginia Maurer, M. D. founded The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education (TMF). Dr. Maurer recognized the need among her patients for a better understanding of breast cancer – its symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, cure rates and most importantly, the early detection of breast cancer and its relationship to a lifetime of good health practices.

TMF is a 501c3 organization dedicated to educating women of all ages about the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. To accomplish its mission “to provide women and adolescents with the skills and knowledge necessary to change behaviors that affect breast health,” the Foundation now conducts educational programs, workshops and provides various materials for the benefit of breast health awareness. The first programs were developed and made available to Dr. Maurer’s patients and their families. Over the past decade, TMF has reached more than 68,000 women and men through its many educational programs and community awareness efforts. For your convenience, enclosed please find information pertaining to TMF’s current programs and the population they serve.

TMF’s contributions to women’s health are made possible by a professional staff of seven, an esteemed board of directors and approximately 60 volunteers. On April 9th, TMF commemorated its ten-year milestone at their major fundraising event of the year, The Pink Diamond Ball. Edward Travaglianti, President of Commerce Bank Long Island, and Chairman of TMF’s Board of Directors, was honored for his exemplary guidance, commitment and support to the Foundation for the past ten years. Former Board Members also received special recognition for their significant contributions to the growth and development of TMF.

TMF is poised for growth as it evolves into its second decade, with a strategic plan to expand its programs to an exponentially growing number of women, especially young minority and underserved populations. TMF will reach out to develop new sources of funding to help support this expansion. And, TMF will launch the Healthy Partnership Program to promote company sponsorship of a breast health education program in a particular school or community.
