As we get ready to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m reminded of just how many people are always willing to step up and make a difference.

As The Maurer Foundation’s Events Manager, one of my favorite parts of my job is seeing that support come to life through community fundraising. Throughout the year, I get to work with so many people and organizations who find creative ways to support our mission.

And that’s one of the things I love the most. There is no “right” way to fundraise.

It can be a fitness class, a school fundraiser, a restaurant night, a percentage-of-sales, a special event, or even just a group of friends getting together for a good cause. Something simple can turn into a fun opportunity to raise money, spread awareness, and introduce more people to the importance of breast health education.

A lot of the time, these events become so much more than the fundraiser itself. They bring people together, start important conversations, and help us reach people we may not have reached otherwise. There’s something incredibly meaningful about hearing the stories behind everyone’s “why” and learning what inspired them to get involved and want to make a difference.

Katie’s Tips for October Fundraiser

Thinking about doing something this October? Here are a few things I always recommend:

  • Choose something you actually enjoy. The best fundraisers usually start with something you already love doing. Whether that’s working out, shopping, dining out, playing a sport, or supporting your favorite local business, start there.
  • Start planning early. October gets busy quickly! Pick your idea, choose a date, and start spreading the word as early as you can.
  • Keep it simple. The easier it is for people to understand what you’re doing and how they can participate, the better. You don’t have to overcomplicate it to make an impact.
  • Spread awareness. Fundraising is important, but so is the conversation. Your event is also an opportunity to share information about breast health and why the work of The Maurer Foundation really matters.
  • Ask us for help. You don’t have to figure out everything on your own. Our team is happy to help with ideas, answer questions, and support you along the way.

As October approaches, I hope you’ll think about one way you can get involved and make a difference. No idea is too small. Every fundraiser, every conversation, and every person we reach helps us continue spreading lifesaving breast health education throughout our community. And that’s what makes it all matter.
