From Stance to Swing: Ten Tips for Golf Beginners

Attention Long Island golfers: the 18th Annual Maurer Foundation Golf Classic is fast approaching, now just over a month away on May 9th! We’re looking forward to this event, which is expected to be even bigger and more enjoyable than those held in years past, due to the new spring date.

Take part in this unique opportunity to support a worthwhile cause. The Golf Classic will raise funds for our breast health education programs, which teach people about breast cancer risk factors, preventative measures, early detection, breast self-exams, and mammograms, among other related topics. In anticipation of this day of golfing at the lovely Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, we have compiled ten tips for beginner golfers to help you gear up for the green!

  1. Sharpen your stance: bend your knees and slightly lean over the ball with feet shoulder width apart. Keep feet, knees, hips and shoulders in line with the target.
  2. Get the right grip: there are different types of grips depending on the golfer.
  3. Understand the different types of shots and when to use them. A chip, for example, is when you are moving the ball on a flatter surface, and is a good technique for beginners to stick with. A pitch takes the ball higher, over an obstacle. Putting is appropriate when you are only moving the ball short distances.
  4. Avoid too tight of a grip and keep equal tension in the right and left hands and wrists.
  5. Keep your eyes on the ball; do not look up until the shot has been fully completed. Keep your eyes directly over the ball while putting.
  6. Rotate your hips and shift your weight to the back foot as you bring the club up for the backswing. Rotate the hips and take the weight toward the front as you swing forward.
  7. Strike down on the ball with the club. Do not scoop it upwards.
  8. Follow through. Continue the rotation and swing even after the club makes contact with the ball.
  9. Practice at a driving range. Work on both putting and long shots.
  10. Familiarize yourself with the rules of the game by visiting the United States Golf Association’s website.
