Many thanks to Rockville Centre raw food restaurant Maggie’s Raw Love Café, which will be celebrating it’s grand re-opening October 20th. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the café will be donating $1 to The Maurer Foundation for every raw cheesecake purchased on the special day.

The celebration will include a ribbon cutting at 12 pm, discounted yoga, belly dancing, and pole dancing classes, raw food specials all day, and live drumming and belly dancing performances. The Maurer Foundation will also have a table, educating diners about breast cancer, risk factorsearly detection, and of course, healthy eating! Stop by and say hello, and make sure you pick up a goodie bag at this fun event. Besides great breast health information like our breast self-exam card, the first 50 guests will receive a $5 gift certificate and one lucky person will get a $25 gift certificate to Maggie’s Raw Love Café.

We are super excited about partnering with such a healthy restaurant for this fundraiser. Healthy food choices are at the heart of what we teach. But why is raw food so healthy? Raw food is food that has been heated no higher than 118ºF. For most types of food, the lack of high heat helps preserve nutrients and cancer-fighting antioxidants, which helps fight the cancer-causing free radicals we’re exposed to. In addition, most forms of raw foodism (including the form practiced at Maggie’s) is vegan, meaning lots of vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and sprouted grains, but no dairy, meat, shellfish or eggs. Sounds like the perfect breast healthy diet to us!

In the breast health workshops we present to schools, businesses and community events, The Maurer Foundation encourages people to:

  • Get 9 servings of fruits and vegetable a day
  • Reduce their intake of saturated fat (which is usually found in foods like meat and dairy)
  • Increase their intake of fiber (the best source of which is fruits and vegetables)

The delicious looking items on the menu at Maggie’s Raw Love Café fulfills all of these. Besides The Maurer Foundation Cookies For A Cause program, we can’t think of a yummier way to support Long Island breast health education!
