The Patrina Foundation has awarded The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education a grant of $10,000 to expand the Foundation’s High School Breast Health Program to reach new audiences in medically-underserved communities throughout the New York area.
The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to educating people of all ages about breast cancer risk reduction and early detection. Addressing women and men in schools, community organizations, places of business and through media outlets, the Foundation’s up-to-date educational programs are aimed at dispelling myths and allaying fears about breast cancer while filling the knowledge gap that exists about maintaining breast health. Since its founding in 1995 by Long Island breast surgeon Dr. Virginia E. Maurer, The Maurer Foundation has directly educated over 75,000 people.
Instituted in 1998, the High School Breast Health Program is The Maurer Foundation’s flagship initiative. This innovative in-school program teaches high school students about both breast cancer early detection techniques and about how they can lower their lifelong risk of the disease by making healthier lifestyle choices. 11,828 students benefited from this successful program in the 2004-2005 school year alone.
