The Maurer Foundation Provides Breast Health Education to Students at William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City

On Friday, April 28, 2006, students at William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City were filmed for inclusion in a video that will promote The Maurer Foundation’s flagship initiative, the High School Breast Health Program. Over 150 students in Ms. Eleni Bardatsos’s health education classes received the 40-minute interactive presentation, which focuses on breast cancer risk reduction and early detection methods.

Students learned the most up-to-date information on how to lower their risk for breast cancer and other chronic diseases by making healthier food choices, increasing physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol use. At the same time, they learned about the importance of detecting breast cancer early and practiced breast self-exam techniques on highly-accurate silicone breast models.

Since 2000, The Maurer Foundation has provided its free High School Breast Health Program to over 3,700 students at Bryant High School. Each year, the program is offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are enrolled in the school’s health and physical education classes.

“For years, Bryant High School has been a strong supporter of The Maurer Foundation and its breast health education programs,” said Kim Rozzi, Executive Director of The Maurer Foundation. “It was an honor to collaborate with such a dynamic team of faculty and students on this exciting initiative.”

The Maurer Foundation provides the High School Breast Health Program to schools throughout the New York area at no charge.
