The Maurer Foundation Welcomes Elizabeth “Libby” Zimmer As New Executive Director

[Mineola, NY, February 4, 2008] – The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education, which focuses exclusively on educating women and men of all ages about prevention and early detection of breast cancer, announced today the appointment of Elizabeth “Libby” Zimmer as its Executive Director.  Ms. Zimmer, of Port Washington, NY, brings with her a wealth of experience in healthcare, development, and philanthropic foundations.

“We are thrilled to welcome Libby to the Foundation.  Her impressive track record in the healthcare field, and her abilities to build strategic alliances and oversee operations make her a strong asset in our effort to educate as many people as possible about how to prevent breast cancer or detect it at the earliest possible stage,” said Dr. Virginia Maurer, breast surgeon, who founded the organization in 1995.

Ms. Zimmer is a highly experienced non-profit executive who, prior to joining the Foundation, held positions in New York with the March of Dimes, the St. Charles Foundation, St. Mary’s Foundation for Children, and St. Mary’s Hospital for Children.  Zimmer received her Executive MBA from the New York Institute of Technology, New York, and her BA from the University of St. Thomas, Houston.

“The Maurer Foundation has educated nearly 120,000 individuals about breast cancer prevention and early detection, demonstrating its determination to get the word out far and wide.  A better-educated public is the most important step to beating breast cancer, and I look forward to working with the board, the staff, and the public to reach as many individuals as possible,” said Ms. Zimmer.

Niki Gregory, Chair of The Maurer Foundation and three-time breast cancer survivor added, “Libby’s keen awareness of the value of breast health education, combined with her background directing hospitals and non-profit organizations, makes her a perfect fit as we move forward in our mission to educate, and ultimately save lives.”

About The Maurer Foundation

Dr. Virginia Maurer founded The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education in 1995, when she recognized the need among her patients for a better understanding of breast cancer—its symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, cure rates, and most importantly, the prevention of breast cancer and its relationship to lifetime good health practices.  The Foundation has educated individuals in high schools and colleges, community organizations, and places of business at no cost.
